Help Your Teenager Have a Top-Notch Oral Health by Doing These Things

Posted .

Unfortunately, many teens in the world today suffer tooth decay and damaged chompers. This can alter their oral health and result in major consequences and treatments. If you want your teen to avoid these dental issues, it’s important to do all you can to keep their teeth and gums in tip-top shape. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Paul Szmanda, Tom Nichols, Aaron Pavelski, Kate Collelo and Dustin Dengel, has some tips and recommendations for you.

First, encourage your teen to cut back on soda. Soda is the culprit of many dental issues. In fact, because it contains acid and soda, it promotes enamel erosion and cavities. So, try to help your teen cut back on soda. If they need to drink soda, it’s best to lessen the effects it has on the teeth by drinking it through a straw.

Second, make sure your teen wears a mouthguard while they play high-contact sports. A mouthguard can keep your teen’s smile strong, healthy, and safe when hard, forceful objects hit their mouth. The most common mouthguards available include stock, boil-and-bite, and custom-made mouthguards.

Third, discourage oral piercings. Oral piercings can harm the teeth in more ways than you might realize. In fact, tongue and lip piercings can easily cause cracked and fractured tooth enamel. This can result in the need for a dental filling, root canal treatment, or even tooth extraction.
